2018 Global Citizen Festival Mandela 100

Sunday, 02nd December 2018 was one of the days to be written in the history books -global citizen festival. Nelson Mandela was remembered and everyone came together to celebrate his memory. The pledged funds will be used to improve extreme poverty and better education. Global citizens came together to make this event a success. A-list superstars shared the stage at the festival, led by Jay-Z and Beyoncé.

Tens of thousands of fans filled the FNB stadium to commemorate Nelson Mandela’s bicentenary. The Advocacy group Global Citizen announced their 57 promises totaling over $7-billion (R100-billion), in support of the world’s most relegated.

An emotional series of drawings by Nelson Mandela, called the Struggle sequence, served as a motivation for the festival. The sketches of Mandela’s hands signify not only the story of his life but also the story of his country. They portray his hands in five points representing: imprisonment, struggle, freedom, unity and also the future. They also illustrate the inspiration behind actions that Global Citizens have been taking to see the end to poverty in our lifetime.

Over R4-billion was pledged by the Motsepe Foundation alone, much of it for land reform, while the Global Fund pledged over R5-billion in South Africa over the next 30 years.  In South Africa alone, nearly 200 young women get infected with HIV daily. Local Stars Hit the Global Citizen Stage

The Daily Show’s Trevor Noah players host for the day. Moreover, he was welcomed with warm hands by SA fans. The comedian was also joined by stars such as Danai Gurira, Tyler Perry, Gayle King, Pearl Thusi, Anele Mdoda, Bonang Matheba, and Usher. It was indeed an amazing day.

Concert-goers were treated to a remarkable line-up of local artists like Cassper nyovest, who moved the whole stadium with his performance. Also black coffee, Wizkid, D’banj, Femi Kuti, Sho Majozi and Tiwa Savage.
